  WASHINGTON IRVING [1] Washington Irving was born on April 3, 1783, in New York and died on November 28, 1859, in Tarrytown , New York .  He was an American historian, biographer, and essayist. He was an American ambassador in Spain from 1842 to 1846. Irving was the first American author to achieve international literary renown.
