  WASHINGTON IRVING [1] Washington Irving was born on April 3, 1783, in New York and died on November 28, 1859, in Tarrytown , New York .  He was an American historian, biographer, and essayist. He was an American ambassador in Spain from 1842 to 1846. Irving was the first American author to achieve international literary renown. Therefore, he is considered the “first American man of letters.” Although, He is best known for his short stories “The  Legend  of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle” , this article is intended to analyze the story “The Spectre Bridegroom” which is Part of “The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.
