                                                                          Ernest Hemingway

Levis Leonardo Lozano Hoyos.

Ernest Hemingway was born in 1899 and died in 1961. Due to his literary style, he belongs to the period of literature called modernism. According to Berke, Amy; Bleil, Robert R; Cofer, P, Jordan and Doug, Davis; (n.d). Ernest Hemingway was born and raised in Oak Park, Illinois, an affluent suburb of Chicago. He was the second son of the marriage of Clarence Edmonds and Grace Hall.

Hemingways’ father was a doctor, a physician, who liked hunting and fishing. His mother was a singer and also a teacher, she was ambitious and independent, and his father was deeply religious. (Maybe, his most famous character and book “The Old Man and the Sea were inspired by his father).

The Hemingway family spent many of their summers in northern Michigan, which is a recurring scenery in Ernest’s short fiction stories.

Talking about his personal life, it could be said that in 1920, Hemingway married Hadley Richardson, his second wife was Pauline Pfeiffer, his third one Martha Gellhorn to whom got divorced after meeting Mary Welsh. His turbulent personal life full of childhood traumas and divorced was not an obstacle to writing successfully. In fact, we can discover moments of his life that are masterfully recreated in his books.

It is said Hemingway described his literary style as an iceberg, where ten percent of the story was on the surface and the other ninety percent should be enjoyed, inferred, and explored diving deeply into the text.  This personal writing style could be developed due to a job as a journalist.

Among the writers who influenced his literary style was Sherwood Anderson, who encouraged him to move to Paris after World War I. There, he met Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, this circle of friends and writers guide him to develop his own writing career and to be part of the modernist movement.

His works include several collections of short fiction,  as well as novels and non-fiction. Among them,  I can mention, The Sun Also Rises (1926);  A Farewell to Arms (1929); Death in the Afternoon (1932); To Have and Have Not (1937) and  For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940).

Finally, In 1952, Hemingway wrote his masterpiece work, Old Man and the Sea, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.

Sadly in 1961, repeating the tragic outcome of his father, he got sick and fell into a strong period of depression and ended his life in Ketchum, Idaho.

After his death, some others Heminway’s works were published.  Among them is A Moveable Feast published in 1964.

Now, it is time to read Heminway. It can be said that like many writers, Heminway can be seen as a character in his story. Just to give you an example, let's make a parallel between the text we are going to analyze today, In another country, and a part of his biography, that is told in the book called Writing the Nation:

“In 1917, Hemingway, at that time a writer for The Kansas City Star, was eager to join the Armed Forces to fight in World War I but was medically disqualified. Under courage, he joined the ambulance corps and served on the Italian front. During the shelling, Hemingway received a shrapnel injury but still carried a comrade to safety and was decorated as a hero”. Well, the main character of the story In another country is an American soldier who was wounded in the First World War and he was also decorated with a medal. In this case, Heminway says that the reason he received the honor was just to be an American. The medal had the legend "full of fratellanza and abnegazione", which means “brotherhood and self-sacrifice”.

In Another Country by Ernest Hemingway

In Another Country is a short story written by Ernest Hemingway, in 1926, and describes the life of a wounded soldier in an Italian hospital, during the process of his treatment. Taking into account the period of time when the story was written, I can say that its storyline took place during the first world war.  In fact, according to the question “What will you do when the war is over if it is over?"  that was asked by a Mayor to the main character the war had not ended yet.

In the beginning, it seems to me that the author who is also the main character is trying to describe the cold atmosphere of the war:

As far as I am concerned, it doesn't matter who is a war winner, all the fighters lose something, sometimes those who are still alive are dead inside.

In addition, the hospital, which is the main scene where the plot takes place is described as a beautiful and cold one, where “There were usually funerals starting from the courtyard”.

More details about the description of this hospital allow me to say that the narrator is trying to tell us that in a hospital, we relive the hope to live, but also the death surrounds us.

Something that called my attention was the way in which the author starts to present the main characters:

“There were three boys who came each day who were about the same age I was. They were all three from Milan, and one of them was to be a lawyer, and one was to be a painter, and one had intended to be a soldier”.

This description tells me more about the worst part of a war, not all of its participants want to be part of it. Therefore, while they are fighting they still hope to make their dreams come true.

In my opinion, all the time the narrator who never gives us his name tells us that people hate the war and hate them as well, just because they were soldiers. This was highlighted in the following sentence:

“The people hated us because we were officers, and from a wine-shop someone called out, "A basso gli ufficiali!… (¡Down with the officers!) as we passed”.

In order to continue talking about the way in which the characters are described in this story and maybe the way in which Hemingway wanted to show us his outrage or repudiation of the war I can have an example through these lines:

“Another boy who walked with us sometimes and made us five wore a black silk handkerchief across his face because he had no nose then and his face was to be rebuilt”…

“We all had the same medals, except the boy with the black silk bandage across his face, and he had not been at the front long enough to get any medals”.

We also see in this section, the sad symbol of war medals, they are received by killing the enemy, or by spending a long time fighting against them, but by losing your being or part of it, you do not deserve to obtain one.

Now,  I ask myself: Being wounded during a war is not a good reason to get a medal? Do people have to kill someone? Sometimes someone from their own nation... Does somebody have to be killed in a war to receive the honor to be covered with the flag nation? What honor is that?

In this story, Hemingway also masterfully describes the helplessness and loneliness of the foreigner, even more so in a period of war, sometimes in a war that is not his own. He does it from the same title "in another country". Also in sections such as "The boys at first were very polite about my medals and asked me what I had done to get them. I showed them the papers, which were written in very beautiful language and full of fratellanza and abnegazione, (brotherhood and self-sacrifice) but which really said, with the adjectives removed, that I had been given the medals because I was an American ".

It can also be inferred that the main character is facing a low self-esteem moment or at least he is not feeling proud of his job in the war: “The three with the medals were like hunting-hawks; and I was not a hawk”. He also remarked that he liked the soldier who lost his nose because he thought perhaps he would not have turned out to be a hawk either.

An episode that I liked a lot is the conversation between the mayor and the main character since I really feel identified with the pain of the two characters. First, the soldier was asked “what did you like best to do before the war? What will you do when the war is over? if it is over? And, are you married?

With the soldier's answers and the mayor's feedback, we can have an idea of the feelings and sorrow that a person can have at the time of facing a war. On one hand, it is the hope of the soldier who wants the war to end to continue living, he wants to come back to his country and get married. On the other hand, we can see the sadness of someone who has lost all that he loved, his wife, and with this, he lost his hope.

Finally, I want to finish this literary analysis with the lines expressed to the soldier by the Mayor “a man cannot marry… "If he is to lose everything, he should not place himself in a position to lose that. He should find things he cannot lose.

To my way of thinking  it’s very important to have in mind that war is the worst way to solve a conflict since most of the time the people who suffer the worst part of it are the ones who do not have anything to do with that conflict. I have always thought that wars are rich people’s business where poor people kill each other.

To conclude this literary analysis I want to share a poem that I wrote last year,  it comes to my mind as soon as I started to read this tale:

The country that I want

 I want a peaceful country,

where life can be drawn in all shades.

I want a country in peace:

One in which all of us are welcomed, in which we can be happy.

I want a country in peace:

One in which the act of thinking is not punished.

I want a country in peace,

One in which life germinates in each noble act that conjugates the verb to love.

I want a country in peace:

One in which those who are seeking  the truth are not in danger to be condemned to eternal silence.

I want a country in peace:

One in which people are free from the demagoguery that blesses impunity.

I want a country in peace:

One in which we can travel its  fields, without the fear of being killed.

I want a country in peace,

One in which  we are all good people from dawn to dusk.

I want a country without war,

I want to feel the fresh breeze of eternal peace,

that one that comes with a sweet word of wisdom.

I want to feel the sea breeze of true peace,

I don't want more of this sea of blood,

I want a country that flies its flag of freedom.

  1. Hello, Mr. Lozano:

From my point of view, when the narrator states that they do not go to the war anymore, he suggested that he was injured so he couldn't join the fight. There was a war going on, but they weren't there.

Talking about multiple layers of irony in the text, He repeats the word boys, but then calls them officers. All of them had medals and the most wounded had no metal. Fencer injured his hand.

Hemingway's style is simple and uses words that the reader will fully understand. The theme of Hemingway is fear of war and loss of innocence, youth for age. He established it by his pick and choice of words.

  2. Hello, Mr. Lozano.
In my view, the story is very simple, because nothing significant happens and it does not have a clear or adequate position in a conflict, but it shows us a reality in which in previous years, soldiers who were discharged due to accidents in battle were decorated with simple medals and the contempt of an indolent society, in addition to being a story of little action and little to say, the description is very objective, so it sets the loneliness and hopelessness of the soldiers at that time. In the same way, presents the reality of those soldiers without glorious memories of the past or hopeful dreams for the future.

  4. Hello, Mr. Lozano!

IN ANOTHER COUNTRY by Ernest Hemingway

I believe that the isolation has to do with a prevalence this topic on Hemingway’s works and life story. Moreover, this same topic we can find it in The Old Man and The sea in which the setting is the Sea, this refers to the vast unknown, to the unpredictable ways that life can go; in this case, the isolation is related to this American in the front line during the war and the fact of confronting this daily. Additionally, Hemingway seems to be printing his own life in the plot and title of the story. The isolation he felt being in a war, in another country and with no known friend or family around is the main issue along his life and the life of the characters. *MARIA PEÑA DIAZ*

  5. In my opinion the story was written in an easy-to-understand language. Since the author used the Iceberg approach he did not write so many details, rather he left the deep part of the story for us, as readers, to assume and in this case, we have to imagine what happens to rest of the characters at the end of the story. He also used to attribute his writing style to his time spent as a journalist, and maybe that's why we can perceive that he was narrating but reporting details, for instance his surroundings as he walked through Milan streets.

  6. The narrator suggest that they dont go to the war anymore maybe due to the bad exprience that they had, be soldier is a risk that the people take and they need to take into account that maybe they are not going to be the same people again, is stupid expose our lifes for other persons that are in their home safe and healthy while the soldiers are fighting for them. In the story the doctor give them hope talking about the machines that are going to help them and he say that they are going to be the same as in the begining but that is false, their lifes are affected and that is not going to change.

  7. Being in a war has to be something extremely difficult due to the fact that you are killing or figthing people that you do not even know and that you do not hate, you fight people because another person just was not in agreement with someone else, so, I would not go again to war either because it is a waste of time. The cold air, the difficult situations, the hospital, the injured people, are facts and characteristics used to stated the theme on the story that was war, a foreing fighting someone else war, life has to be something else, life is beautiful.

  8. I think that people usually need to be told some lies to recover from a bad moment, but at the end this only give us false hopes that instead of getting better, makes you go deeper into the bad things, in this story, the doctor tries to make the injuried soldiers hope for a better life after some treatment but the reality is that the machines they are using won´t improve anything. in adition is curious how the people that are not fighting in a war seee with bad eyes those who are fighting for them and their contry. That´s why the author at the end criticizes the war and say that he won´t go to a war never

  9. Within the story I can find a characteristic style of Ernest Hemingway and it is that he does not have a name for the main character in his stories, likewise he uses many descriptions of meaning and emotions, which gives originality to the places and is related to the reader story context.
I believe that the machines are a symbol of fear and at the same time fear of death, likewise there are symbols such as the window at the end of the story.
Finally, I think the author thinks that he is not going to war again because he realizes that his life is worth more than a medal or serving a nation and perhaps he reflects on the death of the eldest's wife since he does want to get married. and have a different life

  10. Hemingway himself declared that his work as a journalist had even influenced him aestheticcally, since it forced him to write direct, short and harsh sentences, excluding everything that was not significant. The idea of detachment naturally fits the story, as readers would expect that the veterans, now far from the front and dealing with their physical and emotional wounds, would feel separated from the rest of society, and readers may also expect Hemingway’s terse style to suggest detachment itself. The American is detached from the Italian soldiers in his group, mainly because he received his decorations only “because I was an American” (208). He is learning Italian and is not very good at it, and that also makes him detached from the group.

  11. Hello, Mr.!
IN ANOTHER COUNTRY - ERNEST HEMINGWAY.
This story was very short but describe the relationship that develop in Milan among an America and five Italian soldiers who have been wounded and are receiving physical therapy.
For me, this story combines two of Hemmingway's narrative devices. Personally I can say that this story is told from the perspective of the American.
Ernest represent the main character, in my opinion because he never talks about his own bravery or his courage or his exploits on the battlefield. All this was a consecuence of his disciplined life until he has to face the death of his wife.

  14. Personally, I think that this modernist novel was a great one and is about the story of some soldiers that were heavily affected by terrific events. I like the blatant language that Hemingway uses because it makes the situations more understandable and the sense of being reachable. On the other hand, this short story has three important aspects to expose the characters' lives. The first one is courage, the second is fear and the last one is isolation and rejection.

  15. From my point of view, medals represent society's wrong view of bravery. They celebrate heroic acts that entail sacrifice, instead of acknowledging or alleviating the psychological trauma that accompanies such acts.

  16. The theme of this book is very evident, because the writer mentions the war from the beginning. Talking about the war experiences of the three soldiers established what could be the main plot of the book. One of the analogies that can be made is the use of the falcon with the situation. The hawk represents the soldiers who go to kill in battle, but it can also represent those who pay for the war and place young people in that war situation.

  17. At the beginning of the story, I notice that the main character does not believe in the machine and the therapy but the doctor promises him that the machine will keep the muscles elastic.
We should really care for the meaningful and important things in our lives, for example, the family. During the story, the other soldiers that are taking therapy with the machines brag about the medals that they've received for their valor in battle. On the other hand, the Italian major never brags about his own bravery due to his wife has just died.
I personally believe that it had a meaningful message towards the end. Even though the major had experienced a great deal of loss and pain, he told himself that he mustn’t surrender his whole self to the pain and let it devour him completely. Personally, I think it’s something that everyone should know and realize if they were to ever encounter something similar.

  18. In another country shows the conflicts during a war and how impactful it can be for those who took part. This novel is an example of the Iceberg Theory that Hemingway used in his writings. We can see how the considered "Hawks" were only bragging about their medals and bravery throughout the history because these were the only important things they had left and, in mi opinion, they were actually avoiding the mental pain the war occasioned; While the major, another character, showed a different side by not bragging about his achievements, but demonstrating his depression and the lost he suffered.
On the other hand, the machines were being used by the men, including Nick, to recover from their wounds, however, they were not working. This can be seen as a way to explain that it was imposible for them to return as they were before the war. The wounds continued there because they were not having the correct recovery, and the same happended with their poor mental state. In the story most of sceneraios were foreshadowed by feelings of numbness and loneliness, which shows the struggle the main character had. Nick felt he was in another country because the war continued and everything in the streets and the hate he received indicated that fact, however, inside the hospital was different since he was there just to recover as a patient, finally away from the war.

  19. Based on the reading about Ernest Hemingway I can say that I really admire him because without take into account the bad things he faced off, he never stops doing the things he liked. Instead of that, he took those things like inspiration for his works. I had the opportunity to read a short book he wrote called “The Old Man and the Sea” which for me was interesting because he told the story like if he was in there. Also, he describes step by step all the things the old man passed and how he perceived the little things. As a curious fact, this master piece obtained the Nobel prize for literature in 1954 which means that we must read it, And I really recommended you. Honestly, I would like continuous reading about this interesting man.

  22. Hi, Everyone!

Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961), was an American novelist and one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. He had a good participation during the First World War during his stay in Italy as an ambulance driver and was even awarded a bronze medal for his great service. Throughout his life, Hemingway was married 4 times and wrote a book for each of his wives.
On the other hand, his life was not the best, Hemingway suffered 2 plane crashes, suffered several bruises and injuries, he also suffered from malaria and his mental health also deteriorated as he suffered from depression, an illness that led him to commit suicide.
One of his most popular works was "In another country", written in 1926 but published in 1927 and which focuses on the life of soldiers in the aftermath of the First World War. The story takes place during the cold autumn in Italy and follows the life of an American soldier who was wounded as a result of the war.
Hemingway shows us through this short but profound story the physical and emotional scars and traumas that soldiers come to experience. What caught my attention the most is that no matter how much their physical wounds are treated with "machines", their soul wounds continue to bleed. Even though they are not on the front lines, they continue to struggle and suffer from the traumas of the horrors of war as the American soldier, who at one point in the story comments that he is afraid to go to the war again and that he can't sleep well, even though he is not on the front lines.
"In another country" shows how many times these men (young or old) must leave their lives to go to war because they have no choice and must fight to get out alive either whole or in pieces, it also shows how in the end their "bravery" is measured with a simple medal. But is a gold or bronze medal really worth the physical and emotional integrity of a person? The war can go on, it can stop, you never know but, someone's life will never be the same and the wounds of the soul are difficult to heal.

  23. Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist.
When He was young, He wanted to enlist in the army, but an old eye injury prevented him. He entered the Red Cross and became an ambulance driver on the Italian front where he was seriously injured.

The book "In Another country" is partly autobiographical, because the author writing about his own experiences when he attended the first World War and was wounded.

The story is about a group of war soldiers who were injured and are being treated at a nearby hospital in Milan.

The narrator is one of the soldiers who was wounded in his knee and liked to play football, the others are three wounded Italian officers who had planned to be a lawyer, painter and soldier before the war and a young man who has a disfigured face.

This group of soldiers come together because they share similar situations, plus they keep each other company while receiving their treatment, but it is obvious that they need more than physical treatment to erase the effects of war.

  25. Hellooo everyone I want to comment "In Another Country" by Ernest Hemingway is a work that I appreciate for its authenticity, intimacy, and profound reflection. This work is even related to the author's own life, as it portrays a wounded soldier in World War I. Throughout the story, Hemingway reflects his personal experiences and emotions, adding authenticity and depth to the work, as he himself was on the frontlines of the war working as an ambulance driver. The author's personal narration and ability to convey his own emotions make the story genuine, captivating, and deeply moving. Through this work, Hemingway invites us to question our own identity, contemplate human connection, reconsider our values, and explore the search for purpose in the world. The way the author immerses us in his personal experience and invites us to connect with our own internal struggles is something that I find fascinating and profoundly enriching. Ultimately, "In Another Country" is a work that I appreciate because it allows me to connect with humanity, evokes empathy, and profoundly touches me.

  26. Greatings.

One of the granddaughters of this acclaimed author once said that her family was full of creative and talented people, who struggled with mental and family difficulties. I agree in the way in which these depths of character marked Ernest Hemingway at such a profound level, making his work more disconcerting, profound and personal than very few artists but "artists in their five senses" could reach. But this type of success is what fed characters like Hemingway in his narcissism and in the dismissiveness of those health problems, physical and mental, which incidentally negatively affect his family life and relationships with those close to him. This author also suffered from depression and for this reason he was able to convey his sinism and resignation in life through the musings of his fictitious characters.

  29. A brilliant writer. His way of processing the events of his life, mixing them with letters and imagination won him one of the most important prizes: the Nobel Prize for literature. As for his story, "In another life" explores the after-effects that war leaves on soldiers, both physical and psychological, the change in them and their future after such traumatic events, losing their north, their personality, character, becoming empty and full of resentment for what they have suffered.

Been honest at the moment of reading the story "In another country" I realized that the protagonist in fact is the writer Ernest Hemingway, he was part of different wars and he witnessed in his own skin how the war affected everything around him, also the story serve as a reminder of all that the war affected life, mind, and life style.

  31. In my opinion, "In Another Country" was one of the most captivating stories during the entire literature course. Hemingway manages to present a stark and realistic view of the horrors of war and how it comes to people. His direct and concise writing style allows the author to effectively capture the devastation and emotional toll wounded soldiers experience while recovering in a hospital. The narrative immerses us in a world full of frustration and despair, where universal themes such as human suffering and the search for meaning in the midst of adversity are explored.

  32. In my point of view, this story combines two of Hemingway's favorite narrative devices: First, he creates an older, seasoned code hero, a man who has confronted life and has experienced the hard, cruel world but has not given in to any display of emotion; he has carefully refrained from baring his emotions except in this very rare case of the death of his young wife. He never talks of his own bravery or his courage or his exploits on the battlefield; he lives a highly disciplined life until he has to confront the death of his wife. Second, in contrast to the older code character, we have the initiate here, young Nick Adams, the innocent soldier who is just entering into a world of war and violence.

  33. In my opinion, Ernest Hemingway gives us a great short history that not only tell his experience being in the army, but how life can be valued and, at the same time, wasted. I find this story interesting and bittersweet for showing part of things make us humans as being brave, weak and immortals. It’s nothing but truth when Hemingway says “all the fighters lose something, sometimes those who are still alive are dead inside” because that’s the cruelty of war, soldiers might be lucky to come back alive, but they won’t be the same person that left home once.
Hemingway makes me think how people can hate each other for their uniforms, religions and “sides”, blaming each other for who’s right in a war when the ones who are need to blame are the ones who started the war for instance. It is absurd when soldiers are awarded medals for giving their lives on the battlefield. It is absurd when soldiers are awarded medals for giving their lives on the battlefield when no one should be risking their lives for bad decisions that their superiors make.
There are so many things that Ernest Hemingway is showing us in this story that we could not simply talk about just one thing.

  34. In Another Country explores the psychological and emotional aftermath of war, as well as the themes of isolation, identity, and the futility of heroism.
One of the aspects that I can see in the story is the depiction of the soldiers' physical and emotional detachment. The soldiers are physically wounded, but their emotional scars run deeper. They struggle with the loss of their limbs, their physical abilities, and their sense of identity as warriors. They are united by their shared experiences of war, yet they are also isolated from society and feel estranged from their former selves.
For me the story also explores the concept of heroism and the disillusionment that can arise from it. Overall, "In Another Country" presents a poignant examination of the physical and psychological wounds inflicted by war. Hemingway's restrained and introspective storytelling style allows readers to empathize with the characters' struggles and contemplate the universal themes of identity, isolation, and the complex nature of heroism.

  35. "In Another Country" is a short story written by Ernest Hemingway that was first published in 1927. It is set in an Italian hospital during World War I and explores the experiences of soldiers who are physically and emotionally affected by war. The story's examination of the idea of courage is one of its strong points. The group of characters, which includes the narrator, a wounded American soldier, and other soldiers of various nationalities, come to understand one another through their wounds and their experiences. Despite their bravery and sacrifices, they must face the hard truth that bravery does not always result in success or acclaim.
Additionally, "In Another Country" addresses the issue of identification. As they fight with their physical infirmities, the soldiers in the story also battle with their sense of self. They discover that they are estranged from their former selves and unable to properly reintegrate into their former lifestyles.
